How CET-Enviro Helped Kempegowda International Airport Save 7.25 Million KHW of Energy
CET-Enviro recently finished their project with Kempegowda International Airport located in Bangalore. The aim of the project was to limit energy consumption and make the operation more efficient. We have helped many other enterprises with innovative technologies to help them get rid of the excessive waste of energy.
Like the other clients of CET-Enviro, the Kemplegowda was also facing the problem of high energy consumption. We developed a long and strategic plan along with the staff of the enterprise to solve the arising problems in this regard.
What was the problem?
The issue with Kempegowda International Airport was of the excessive energy consumption. The airport wanted to mitigate the consumption and use other sources of generating energy. The Specific Energy Consumption of the terminal building was 20.15 KWH/Sq. M in the year 2015-16.
This data alone is enough to throw light on the high level of energy consumption of the institution. The airport needed improvements in many areas and that is why it was necessary to use innovative measures here.
With the abundance of advanced solutions available, the task of mitigating the energy consumption was not much difficult. In fact, our dedicated team provided them with many solutions which helped them get great results with an impressive ROI.
How it was solved?
We had to use many advanced solutions to help the airport in saving its energy. As the airport is an institution with constant public use, the implementation shouldn’t have hindered its productivity.
Without disturbing the operations of the airport, we were able to successfully implement the following solutions:
Saved around 150,000 KWH Energy with Centrifugal Chillers
The use of Automatic Tube Cleaning System helped in increasing the efficiency of the institution considerably. Its installation also helped in conserving more energy and reducing the downtime of the equipment used in the airport.
The purpose of the Automatic Tube Cleaning System is to keep the tubes free from any kind of wasteful deposits. When waste material (mud, biological fouling, etc.) gets accumulated in the tubes, the machinery becomes less efficient. It consumes more energy to operate and heats up frequently.
With the help of the ATCS, the tubes get cleaned automatically. Therefore, the equipment works for a longer time without any technical issues or overheating. This implementation alone was able to help them save 1,47,588 kWh units of energy in total. The annual energy conservation through this implementation was 1.2 Million KWH units. The ROI of this innovative implementation was 53.8%.
Reduced Turn-Around Time by 4 Times
Apart from the different applications on the machinery of the institution, it was also necessary to increase the efficiency of the operations. By improving the communication and management of the staff, the technical problems arising with the equipment were reduced substantially.
We used digital applications in numerous instances to make the operations of the airport more advanced. It not only led to an increased efficiency of the staff but it also enhanced the customer experience.
The customers can give huge insights into the energy-related issues of the airport. We spotted this opportunity. By using RCCB and other advanced measures, we were able to reduce the turnaround time by 4 times.
The solution of the issues used to take 15 to 20 minutes but after the applications, the response time is now 4 to 5 minutes. We used the Integrated Monitoring Tool to cover all of the different aspects of the terminal building.
50 Million Units from Renewable Sources
Using renewable sources for generating energy was one of our primary goals with this project. Use of solar power solutions on numerous strategic locations helped the airport in generating energy.
A 0.5 MW installation of solar power on the rooftop, 2.5 MW on the ground, 0.44 MW on the carport and similar other applications helped us in increasing the renewable energy to 50 Million Units.
Now, the airport gets 70% of its energy through renewable sources. Maximum use of daylight and multiple permanent Noise Monitoring Stations has also improved the institution.
Multiple rainwater harvesting measures such as on the rooftop of the terminal building have reduced the water requirements of the airport. It now utilizes 100% of the treated water for firefighting and HVAC.
Waste Utilization as an Additional Source
The waste generated by the airport was another hidden gold mine for us. That is so because the Kempegowda Airport generated a lot of waste, which could have been used as a great source of energy.
The restaurants, retail outlets and the aircraft were generating most of the waste. We started sending the plastic, newspaper, pet bottle and other similar wastage to ITC Limited for recycling the same.
Biodegradable waste is now being used to generate Biogas. The rest of the material is then converted to compost. The airport has also begun using colour coded bins for keeping the different kinds of wastes segregated.
Similarly to the plastic waste, we send the tetra packs to an authorized institution. They make up for the 15% of the total waste generated by the airport. This way, the airport was able to convert most of the generated wastage into a powerful source of energy.
The Impact:
Along with the above additions, we have also done LED conversion, optimization of UPS system, removed unwanted lighting and installed air curtains at exit points to make the institution more energy efficient.
The total energy savings of the Kempegowda International Airport are now over 7.5 Million KWH units. And it only took us 3 years to achieve this feat.
